Not exactly one step further, but one step less in the wrong direction ;-)

B.t.w. might there be a number on the other side?

You mean, hidden under the paint? No, I don't think so. We shall try and check that as well.

Normally the framenumber is on the other side. I did help identify a Gazelle bakfiets earlier, which had numbers on each side of the saddle tube. The shorter number on one side didn't make any sense for a Gazelle (2 letters and 4 numbers), but the number on the other side gave a date which matched with the type of frame Gazelle used back then. That bakfiets did have more parts to recognize it as Gazelle as well, such as the cranks.

Hm. Regarding those Gazelle frame numbers: is there some public data base available? I only read about this one here:

http://www.rijwiel.net/dbase_n.htm

But there is no searchable data base available. I send an email to Herbert Kuner as stated in the text (no answer yet).

There must be some contemporary catalogues, leaflets etc, where we could compare the different manufacturers models with ours, I suppose. The cargo hold frame of ours is a bit special (though not unique, as it seems from the Pannerden-bakfiets) and should be to be identified.

The bakfiets is right now at Gerhards flat, we will meet tomorrow again and doubble-check the left saddle tube side for an additional number. We will dismantle the cranks then as well, so good time to measure the bottom bracket/axle/crank combo.

Not a publically available one. All members of De Oude Fiets receive a dating booklet, which has lists of frame numbers for a number of dutch bicycle makers.

Catalogs are available here:

There's only one there for Gazelle. I've got another from the 1960's with a Gazelle bakfiets, that also doesn't have a single tube frame. When Gazelle bakfietsen split off as Apollo (IIRC), they did produce bakfietsen with single tube frames, but those used square tubes instead.

There's one for sale of those square tube bakfietsen at the moment, located on the isle of Fehmarn, 150km NE of Hamburg. Plus another one, a Germaan, same seller, but with double tube frame.

Interesting to see them having ended up all the way up there.

Well... there's a dealer specialising in dutch bakfietsen in Australia - why shouldn't they have spread before? ;-)

At least it would be good to preserve as much information as possible regarding these traditional ones.

Just to keep you updated on this bakfiets:

I had a chance to talk to Hans from Berlin (https://www.facebook.com/Bakfiets-Laste ... 567794509/) today. He owns a collection of bakfietsen with a very similar, if not identical model, showing a "Union" label on one of the fenders. His model has a parking brake attached on the main tube and we can see the holes and a small attachment for this on our own model, the parking brake itself is missing though.

Yours,
Michael
