Gazelle No.1 Crankstel (Request from Germany)

Hi,

sorry for not writing in Dutch but I'm in search for a 'crankstel' for my Gazelle No. 1 I'm currently overhauling .

I bought the Gazelle in the Netherlands in a mixed condition. Frame was good, but painted with a brush ruining the linings and most of the seat tube logo (the golden one with a radial spoked wheel) but mostly no rust.

Unfortunately the crankset was bend, twisted and the cotters have been hammered so deep into the cranks that they were nearly on level with the crank. Also the cotters where hammered in the wrong way on one side, so that both cranks did not line up in a straight line.

I've already acquired a new bottom bracket by Thun, unused and in a new condition. Would be great to also find a crankset for my Gazelle No. 1 in a good or repairable condition, thanks for any offers! :)

Hi,

Your best bet would be to check for these parts on the following site; www.marktplaats.nl
Go to chapter "Fietsen" (bikes) and next to the sub chapter "Onderdelen" (parts) I have seen them for sale there quite often.
Alternatively you can visit swap meets like the one coming up in Berlicum on 13.10.2013 (www.fietsverzamelbeurs.nl)
Good luck, Peter :D

Hallo Jan-Peter,

The Berlicum event is certanly a good idea.
I want to warn you for something else.
Namely Gazelle had a bottom bracked axle of 16 mm (BSA type) and in some cases even 17mm (the thomson type).
So If you place a thun axle into the Gazelle frame the Gazelle crancks might be to lose. An average axle is 5/8 inch in diameter and that is about 1/10 mm to small.
Please use Original Gazelle axles with Original Gazelle crancks and everything is going to fit the right way.

Best regards ,
Maarten

if it is indeed an Nr°1, then you will need a Thompson bracket.

Look for a "Reich" axle, these are replacement Thompson brackets that mostly fit well into your Nr1.
There are a few resellers in Berlicum that always have these shafts with them. Before, you will have to measure the cups on your bike, because these 'Reich' shafts have different size cups (fortunately, they are replaceble).

On your bike, you will need something like 41 or 42 mm cups.

Siince you are from Germany, you maybe find a Reich axle in your own neighberhood. 'Reich' is a German brand and I believe it is used frequently in German bike.

Another address for this part is probably 'schönefun.de'

Good luck.
Ed.

Hi Ed,

thanks for more additional information. It is indeed a No. 1, you can still see a little bit of the Gazelle logo on the seat tube, with the No. 1 label :)

Serial number is 1296305, so this Gazelle was build around 1958.

okay.
You can see an example of the original shaft on the restauration pictures of my 1955 Nr1.
see picture 65 of the following webalbum
https://picasaweb.google.com/asterduc/1 ... directlink

That should be the same model as you have.

Another example can be seen on the picture below, which is from my 1962 Sport Luxe.
This is a Reich replacement shaft like I mentioned in my previous reply.

Hi,

today I got the old cups out of the frame which I'm currently prepairing for repainting.

The Cups have a outer diameter of 45mm! With a little bit of work I could fit a BB30 Press Fit Bottom bracket

Never heared of such a big Thompson bottom bracket.
