I would love to keep my original paint on this bike, but sadly, its been roughly brush painted at some time in its 80+ year history. thanks to kind posters on this forum, we have some pictures of where the original artwork should be. I guess these were screen printed, but Bikes with all the original lettering are few and far between.

so I have been working on some artwork this week, the first being for the Parcel rack I think.

there is one on the seat column I believe, just vertical black letters, and maybe one (a scroll with an inscription) on the truss bar. would anyone have any better pictures of the others?

these decals were fixed with laquer.
You can maybe buy imitations which are water decals, but I do not like them very much.

Sometimes original decals are sold on Marktplaats.
Do you think your bicycle is a no. 7? I doubt it very much.
But your design looks nice!

Thanks guys for taking the time to reply . I've had a good look around the forum, and found some pictures of amazing original bikes. I have also seen the decal sets Maarten linked to. I am not a huge fan of waterslide decals either, and I would hope that if I bought set of those that the Artwork might be better than the picture.

As for my bike being a number 7. Probably not. I had found a good picture of that one though and though If I did that one up nicely it might inspire some discussion about the decals. I would like this bike as close to the factory condition as possible when I'm done, so any feedback is helpful. I imagine it had gazelle on the seat column though, and I am presently making templates and trying to mark the original striping on it too.
As for the factory process , I wonder if you can elaborate further, Maarten ? Mayb it can be replicated ?

well its a bit confusing you start a new thread every 2 days. Someone gave you a link to Maarten Waarle's nr 7 from 1931, wasn't it?
This should show the decals.
Here is a seat tube decal on my 1939 nr. 8. No other decals attached.

But maybe 1931 still had the down tube decal GAZELLE on it.

These isn't much to tell what model mine is. I believe it's NOT a number 7 or 8 . Currently trying to join oudefiets so I can take a look at the databank. I guess there was just a basic model.

Maybe I have missed it, but in which country do you live if I may ask?

looks like the main difference between the number 1 and the Popular was the pedals? I don't think mine has the fancy Gazelle pedals.

Trying to find out what model a Gazelle is is not always easy I experianced.
There is next to the difference of models also the changes they made during the years.
For instance in 1931 there was only the model 7 model which had the option of V-grove bearings . In 1917 this was called the model 12 and in 1939 it were the models 1, 8 and L which had the possibility of V-grove bearings.

The difference of models lay in many small things like leather ore moleskin chain cover, Romanium rims ,Kronprinz rims ore nameless ones. Different pedals like you mentioned,different quality of tyres etc.

One clearly visible thing is the bottom bracket. On the more luxery models 7,8,9 in 1931 the bracket was made the Englisch way with cups srewed in to the frame.The diameter is wider than what is usual on BSA brackets.
The one with the V-grove bearings looks like a BSA type bottom bracked but is much larger of diameter.

The Model P had the typical Dutch style bracket with pressed in cups and cones with thread on the axle.It has a very wide diameter and the dustcover rotates together with the axle.

The model 1 might have had that as well but it is also possible that this model 1 had the smaller (for englisch bicycles normal
size) srewed-in cups with clamping screws to fix it.
I am not sure.

Best is to send some detail photo`s to the group so we can get an idea about what model it is and what eventualy is wrong ore has been changed some where in the past.
