can someone explain how this might come apart, or if I should leave it alone and not worry about the wear?
She's 80 years old, what would you expect?
To me it looks pretty decent still. If you take close up pictures on other bikes, you probably find equal situations or worse.

You could press it out, clean and oil it and then put the bushing back in place, just to avoid that some left-over moisture stays in it.

I don't know if it is wise to put some rust-neutraliser on it. But thin penetration oil and cleaning with pressurized air, that I would do anyway before the assembling.
Needless to say to avoid water in this area.

About this bracket I would say do not press this cups out.

There is a thin metal sheed formed to a tube to prevent rust etc to get towards the ball bearings. You can not remove this thing without destroying it.
And I agree with Ed that they are still in a good shape.
The saying is then ''do not repair what is not broken''.
Those Gazelle axles are the strongest I know.
The size diameter is 17mm Realy heavy.

this is a thankyou post, and a look at some parts that arrived in a big box from Holland.

I had a trial fit tonight, and some will need a little modification, but its starting to look like its going to all work.

:) Emma is a very happy girl!
